Management of research and publication misconduct
When evaluating the publication of submitted research articles, Kosin Medical Journal (KMJ) maintains a vigilant stance regarding suspected cases of misconduct, which includes addressing a wide range of issues such as redundant (duplicate) publication, plagiarism, fabricated data, undisclosed conflicts of interest, changes in authorship, ethical concerns related to submitted manuscripts, instances of reviewers appropriating authors' ideas or data, complaints against editors, and other relevant matters. In response to such situations, KMJ diligently follows a systematic resolution process in accordance with the flowchart provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE, http://publicationethics.org/resources/flowcharts).
The esteemed Editorial Board of the KMJ convenes to thoroughly examine and deliberate on the suspected cases, leading to a well-considered decision. KMJ will maintain an unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability, and when necessary, it will not hesitate to issue publications such as errata, corrigenda, clarifications, retractions, or apologies to ensure accuracy, integrity and rectification in the academic discourse.
Errata
Errata serve as a valuable mechanism for rectifying any errors that may have occurred during the various stages of writing, typing, editing, or publication of an article, such as misspellings, dropped words or lines, or mislabeled figures. To submit an erratum to KMJ, authors are required to utilize the online manuscript management system.
In the Abstract section of the submission form, authors should enter "Not Applicable" as the response. The proposed erratum, in the form of a Microsoft Word file, should be uploaded through the same system. For guidance on the appropriate formatting, authors are encouraged to refer to a recent issue of the journal. This ensures that the correction process is carried out efficiently and accurately, maintaining the integrity of the published work.
Author Corrections
In the event that alterations to authorship, such as additions, deletions, or changes in author order, are necessary, the corresponding author is required to complete the authorship change form and submit it through the KMJ's online manuscript management portal. This form should bear the signatures of all existing authors as well as any new authors being added.
Within the Abstract section of the submission form, an entry of "Not Applicable" is to be made as a mandatory field. The proposed correction, in the form of a Microsoft Word file, must be uploaded through the same advanced system. Upon the author's request for a change, the editorial committee subsequently convenes an ethics committee meeting to discern the appropriateness of the modification.
Should the need arise to include a new author or remove an existing author after the initial submission, it is on the onus of the corresponding author to ensure that all pertinent authors are duly informed and agree to the alteration in authorship. It is essential to note that the KMJ disclaims any responsibility for such changes.
For guidance on the precise formatting requirements, authors are encouraged to consult a recent issue of the journal, ensuring that any amendments are accurately implemented while maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in scholarly publishing.
Retractions
The issuance of retractions is a reserved measure, implemented solely in response to significant errors or breaches of ethics that cast doubt on the veracity of data sources, as well as the validity of results and conclusions presented in an article. Authors seeking to submit retractions should do so through the online manuscript management portal provided by KMJ.
Upon submission, authors are required to indicate "Not Applicable" in the Abstract section of the submission form. The proposed retraction, in the form of a Microsoft Word file, should be uploaded accordingly. To ensure thorough documentation, authors must furnish letters of agreement, signed by all co-authors as a scanned pdf and labeled as Miscellaneous Files Not for Publication.
The retraction process involves comprehensive review and oversight. The retraction will be directed to the editor-in-chief of the journal, the editor who initially handled the paper, and the chairperson of the KMJ Editorial Board, all of whom will partake in the deliberations. Should a unanimous agreement be reached, confirming the appropriateness and content of the proposed retraction, it will then proceed to publication through the Journals Department.
For matters concerning research and publication ethics not explicitly addressed in these instructions, authors are encouraged to consult the authoritative Guidelines on Good Publication Practice (https://publicationethics.org/files/u7141/1999pdf13.pdf) or the comprehensive Good Publication Practice Guidelines for Medical Journals (http://kamje.or.kr). These resources serve as invaluable references to ensure that the highest ethical standards are upheld in scientific publishing.
